In our region, the Baltic German nobility were once known for their hospitality. But how do today’s manor owners and caretakers treat their guests? Culture enthusiasts will find the answer on the Merry Manor Tour, a self-guided journey of discovery.
Estonian manor culture developed during the Middle Ages when manors served as centers of local economic and cultural life. The manors were primarily owned by Baltic German nobility, who significantly influenced the region's architecture, art, and traditions. Estonia is home to over 1,000 historic manors, many of which have been preserved and restored, representing various architectural styles such as Baroque, Classicism, and Historicism. These manors often featured large parks, grand main buildings, and auxiliary structures that reflect the wealth and lifestyle of the past. Estonian manors also played a key role as centers of education and innovation, hosting schools and advancing agricultural practices. Today, these manors offer visitors the chance to explore history, enjoy cultural events, and use them as unique holiday destinations.
The first stop is Anija Manor, which offers plenty to explore: a magnificently restored main building, an immersive permanent exhibition, a stunning park, and a charming café. If you visit on a Wednesday or Sunday, don’t miss the fascinating guided tour.
At Café InnAmorata, you can enjoy a blend of traditional Estonian flavors and Italian cuisine in a romantic, period-style setting.
At Habaja Distillery, you can see how the old Habaja manor distillery building, built in 1881, has been revitalized as a family business. With prior reservation, you can tour the winery and sample a variety of wines, accompanied by delicious pizzas straight from the stone oven. Wine and handcrafted lemonades are also available for purchase.
On weekends, the pizzeria is open without reservation. For the latest updates on opening hours and events, check out the distillery’s Facebook page (in Estonian).
Raikküla Manor is best explored with a pre-booked guided tour (minimum 10 people). The tour includes captivating stories about past traditions and customs, an introduction to the manor's architecture and park, as well as its impressive collection of manor furniture. If the names Bach and Bismarck sound familiar, let the hosts share the manor’s intriguing connections to these historical figures.
